Emily parks the car in the driveway and turns off the engine. She senses something's on my mind and looks at me. "Spit it out," she says, as we sit in the enveloping darkness of the car.

"Why did you decide to run? What was your 'why'?"

"My 'why'?" Emily licks her lips and leans back in the driver's seat, her eyes staring ahead. "The logical answer would be that I was naturally gifted. I've been fast and athletic ever since I was a child. But the answer I'd probably never tell anyone, except you, is that... I was an impatient girl living in a toxic household that never validated me. So, what's the fastest way to feel validated without losing your mind or doing something crazy? I nod. "You wanted validation, and I want to escape."

"Escape what?"

"The past. So, I run as fast as I can, away from it."

Emily looks at me, and I hope she can't see the tears forming in my eyes in the dark. Her hand finds mine, and the tears threaten to spill over.

"No matter what our reasons, running gave us what we needed. I may not have become what I set out to be, but your journey has just begun, Ashley. And I'm with you, always."

"I know, Emily. It's a good thing you went and spoke to my shy mother all those years ago in the library, or you wouldn't be in my life today."

"How could I not talk to her? She was reading my favorite novel," Emily says.
